The first ever ice rink in Cape Town opened its doors at the Goodwood Show grounds in 1971. The rink changed hands in 1986 and became known as the Cape Peninsula Ice Skating Club. In 1994, the property was sold again and the rink was renamed ‘The Ice Station.’ Ir was then included in the GrandWest Casino & Entertainment World Development.
The Ice Station is an Olympic sized ice surface (60m x 30m.) Two skating disciplines (Ice Hockey and Figure skating) and the public make use of its facilities. A variety of different shows, entertainment and national and international competitions are also hosted there.
The Ice Station is the coolest place in Cape Town and a great day out with the kids to get their hearts racing. If your kids don’t know how to skate, the best way for them to learn is to skate as often as possible and join one of the development clubs that operate within the skating rink.
Once kids have mastered the art of ice skating, its an easy transition to learn more serious techniques that are required for ice hockey or figure skating. The Ice Station are associated 3 main figure skating development clubs, the Black Panthers, Junior Blades and the Sunday Night Club.
The Black Panthers club operate every Sunday and group lessons are run at 14 different levels. Once the basics have been mastered kids may proceed to join the synchronized skating classes. From there, skaters have the option to join the South African Figure Skating Association and receive coaching from professional coaches.
Every Saturday Morning the Junior Blades sessions are held. Group lessons are run at different levels and tests are conducted randomly. Skating lessons are provided by professional coaches in combination with senior skaters.
Finally the Sunday Night Club is held every Sunday night and is a social club for all ages. Assistance is provided to first timers who benefit from continual improvement via group the lessons.
Ice Hockey for kids
Ice Hockey is one of the most exciting team sports in the world and is regularly played at the Ice Station. The Western Cape Ice Hockey association operate from within the Ice Station and teach kids of all ages how to play the game. All ice hockey league games are played on a Monday and Thursday night and spectators are welcome to watch at a small fee.
Every year players from the Western Province, from under 12 to seniors are selected to represent South Africa. Getting chosen to play for your country means the opportunity for your kids to travel to countries like Spain, Iceland, Romaina and Bulgaria to compete.
If you child can skate then the battle is half won, and the Western Cape Ice Hockey Association is always looking for new members, beginners are welcome too. Now is the best time to start so get your kids on that ice now.
Of course, if your child is not up for serious skating or lessons, the ice rink is open throughout the week for leisurely skating and great fun for the whole family.
