Wildlife for kids in Johannesburg

Wildlife for kids in Johannesburg

Our eco-system is monumental for the well-being of the blue planet with every animal having their special place in the food chain. If you ever played “Fox and Rabbit” in school, you’ll know the effects that population explosions have on the fragile environment.

Its obvious then that that we should teach children the importance of loving and respecting animals and wildlife. By exposing them to nature is also a great way to get kids outside instead of them spending all their time couped up at home staring mindlessly into a screen.

Wildlife is all around us – even in our lovely city of Johannesburg. If you look, you’ll find a range of squirrels, rodents, birds and more all around us. It might be a good idea to start a “Spotter’s Book” with your kids to encourage them to write down or draw all the animals they may see.

Kids are copy cat, observational creatures and learn by the actions of others, particularly their parents, so lead by example. Be kind to animals and all wildlife, catch and release those creepy crawlies and other rodents you might find wandering into your home.

Teach your kids how to behave around wild animals – slow, careful movements and no loud noises. If you have pets, teach your kids the right way to pet them, stroking softly and sensitively.

For an outdoor adventure, we’ve put together a list of great wildlife spots for you and your kids to visit in Johannesburg. Take time out of your busy day, explore and show your children how wonderful and majestic our beautiful creatures are.
