JHB Botanical Gardens & Emmarentia Dam

Welcome to The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam, we are just 6km from Johannesburg’s city centre and provide a great day in the Park for your kids. Emmarentia dam is surrounded by the beautiful botanical gardens and is a popular spot to bring your kids for a picnic, walk your dog or go for a jog.

The Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam are home to 7 garden districts, the Herb Garden, the Hedge Garden, Succulent Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Rose Garden, Chapel Garden and Arboretum. The Arboretum is home to a wide variety of exotic trees including the Californian Redwood trees and English Oaks. The Chapel garden was specifically designed to cater for special events and many weddings from all cultural backgrounds have taken place here.

The Botanical Gardens spans over 81 hectares of land and the Emmarentia dam is just over 7.5 hectares. The park itself is fenced with gates and all the entrances are protected by security guards.

Visiting the Botanical Gardens is truly a magical experience for your kids. It’s full of beautiful greenery and lush lawns where your kids can run and play to their hearts content. The park also hosts occasional concerts for those interested in live music events and there is ample space available for large groups of people to sprawl out on the lawns and watch these events in complete comfort.

Activities available at the JHB Botanical Gardens

Bird watching: The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens homes a variety of garden birds and water fowl. Children also have a great time feeding the resident ducks and geese.

Jogging: One of the top spots to go running in Jozi. All paved tracks are well marked and the scenery at the park is simply magnificent. The area is big enough to satisfy the most hard core fitness fanatic. Parking is available inside the park and car guards are on duty to keep your vehicle safe.

Canoeing, sailing & kayaking: The Dabs Canoe Club uses Emmarentia Dam for training and its members include professionals as well as the more casual rowers.

Walking: The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is the perfect place for walking. With its beautiful paved paths, walks can range from 30 minutes up to 2 hours.

Fishing: There are many casual fisherman at the banks of the Emmarentia Dam who spend their weekends fishing for carp and barber.
